West Side rolls in Little League state tournament opener

West Side got off to a rousing start Saturday in the Little League state tournament.

The Hamilton squad hammered Maumee 13-1 in five innings in its opening game at Bevelhymer Park in New Albany.

Matt Ponatoski, Connor Cuozzo and Peyton Davis led the West Side offense with two hits apiece. Ponatoski scored four runs, Cuozzo cranked a home run and Davis rapped a pair of doubles.

Left-hander Cam Carter started and pitched three innings to pick up the win. Davis and Cade Bowling pitched in relief.

Saturday's game was West Side's fourth run-rule victory in five games. It's 35th straight district championship two weeks ago featured three run-rule victories.

West Side will face Tallmadge at 10 a.m. Sunday. Maumee dropped to the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament.

The West Side-Tallmadge winner will face Englewood or Mount Vernon at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
