Fairfield High School’s football team used a huge first half on both sides of the ball to rout visiting Sycamore 40-7 on Friday night at Fairfield Stadium.

The homecoming victory extended the Indians’ winning streak to five, and they are 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the Greater Miami Conference (tied with Colerain for first place). The Aviators dropped to 4-3, 2-3.

“They were really good and tonight we were really bad, and that’s a bad combination,” Sycamore coach Scott Dattilo said after watching his squad rush for minus-3 yards. “We need to improve on everything moving forward.”

Fairfield was clicking on all cylinders during the first half, and conversely the Aviators were stymied by a stout Indians defense.

FHS had 21 rushes in the first half for 178 yards and five touchdowns, which included 107 yards on 10 carries and two TDs by junior running back JuTahn McClain.

The host Indians were getting it done on the defensive side of the ball as well and were led by senior linebacker Del Thomas, who paced the team with seven solo tackles, two quarterback sacks, one interception and four tackles for loss.

Jordan Jones, Hajiere Pitts and quarterback Jeff Tyus all ran for touchdowns as Fairfield took a 40-0 lead into halftime. Tyus also threw a TD pass to Caleb Sexton.

“I thought our tempo was really good tonight,” said McClain, who finished with 112 yards on 11 carries and pushed his season rushing total to 1,058 yards, making him the first FHS 1,000-yard back since Antoine Moore in 2005. “We usually play at a slower pace, but we really picked it up tonight. Everybody was doing their jobs on both sides of the ball, definitely on the defensive side. We just have to keep working hard moving forward and can’t let up.”

Said Fairfield coach Jason Krause, “We talked in pregame about putting a complete game together. We have played well in phases all year, and tonight we wanted to put all three phases together. I think we did that pretty well tonight. We had a lot of penalties again tonight (13 for 94 yards), and that is one of the things we need clean up.”

Sycamore found the end zone with 24 seconds left in the game when Andrew Fehr hooked up with Jordan McConnell for an 8-yard touchdown.

Fairfield will travel to Oak Hills on Friday, the same night the Aviators host Hamilton.
