The unbeaten Madison High School football team continued its pursuit of a return trip to the Division V playoffs Friday night by blasting visiting Carlisle 54-0.

The Mohawks, 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division, put up all of their points in the first half against the Indians (0-7, 0-3).

“Our guys are very physical,” said Madison coach Steve Poff, whose squad is ranked third in the latest Associated Press state poll. “It takes a while to figure it out sometimes. We are not used to breaking 60-yard runs or even 40-yard runs. We’ve been used to the 4- and 5-yard runs and just moving the chains. But our guys up front really did a good job on both sides of the ball.”

WEEK 7 FOOTBALL COVERAGE

Senior quarterback Mason Whiteman started the offensive fireworks for Madison, throwing a 43-yard touchdown pass to classmate Luke Cornele on the second play of their opening drive. It was 14-0 after Whiteman connected with junior Jake Phelps for a 7-yard TD and and then added the conversion run.

“A lot of our passes come from play-action,” Whiteman said. “From our film study, we knew they were biting a lot and that caused them to come up whenever we faked the handoff. And with great line blocking, our receivers were wide open.”

Carlisle’s woes continued through its next possession as the offense fumbled the ball to the home team in two plays. Zac Reed sacked Whiteman for an 8-yard loss on the opening play of the drive, but the Mohawks answered back on the next play with a 47-yard scoring run by Phelps to increase the lead to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Whiteman, Max Evans and Cameron Svarda all ran for Madison touchdowns in the second period, and Evan Crim scored twice. A blocked punt by Levi McMonigle set up the Evans TD.

“I think this was a great game,” Crim said. “I think we just made a statement tonight. We executed on our fundamentals, and that’s usually a good thing for us. The offensive line played a great game all night. If it wasn’t for them, I couldn’t do anything. I just waited on my carries, and when I got the opportunity, they helped me out to find the end zone.”

Madison finished with 421 total yards of offense while holding the Indians to 96. Crim paced the Mohawks with 131 yards on six carries

Dane Flatter led Carlisle with 25 yards on 17 carries. He was 4-of-7 passing for 22 yards.

Next Friday, Madison will travel to Northridge and the Indians will visit Waynesville.
