Talawanda High School is in the process of trying to fill its head coaching positions in boys and girls basketball.

Boys basketball coach Tim Reed is out after one season and a 5-18 record. He’s also the school’s head baseball coach and was told he needed to pick one or the other.

“High school coaching is not easy. It takes a lot of time,” Talawanda athletic director Wes Cole said. “We thought we’d help him out a little bit. We told him to pick one and we would find somebody for the other spot. He’s already been with the baseball program a couple years, so he chose that.”

Tom Head resigned after going 25-21 in two seasons with the girls basketball program.

“There was more added to his regular job, and he felt like he wouldn’t be able to be there as much as he’d like for the program,” Cole said.

Cole said interviews for the girls job have already started, and boys interviews will likely begin next week. He hopes to have candidates for both positions ready to put on the agenda for the May 21 school-board meeting.

Cole said he’s received about a dozen applications for each job. He confirmed that longtime Mother of Mercy coach Mary Jo Huismann is among the applicants for the girls position.
