College Insider: Middletown’s Smith perfect with his leg at Cincinnati

Cole Smith has yet to miss a kick with the University of Cincinnati football team.

The Middletown High School graduate is a freshman for the Bearcats after sitting out last season as a grayshirt. The 5-foot-11, 188-pound place-kicker is UC’s No. 2 scorer this season with 18 points — he’s 1-of-1 on field goals and 15-of-15 on extra points.

Freshman defensive end Malik Vann (Fairfield) has played in every game off the bench and has assisted on two tackles for UC, which is 3-0 after wins over UCLA, Miami and Alabama A&M.

Cincinnati hosts the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday at noon.

• Redshirt junior defensive tackle Kyle Junior (Middletown) has started every game for Bowling Green (1-2), and he’s got 10 total tackles (six solos, four assists), one sack and one fumble recovery.

The Falcons will begin Mid-American Conference play at home against Miami on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Women's soccer: Junior goalkeeper Allison Garlock (Lebanon) has three shutouts in three appearances for Cedarville, totaling two saves along the way.

The Yellow Jackets are 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. They will visit Tiffin on Thursday at 2 p.m.

• Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Muterspaw (Middletown) has made four starts for Mount St. Joseph and has a 1-0-2 record, collecting 19 saves while allowing four goals.

The Lions (3-1-2) will travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

• Freshman midfielder Hannah Planck (Lakota West) has made three starts and scored one goal for Anderson (Ind.), which is 2-2-1.

The Ravens will visit Trine on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Men's soccer: Redshirt junior midfielder Mohamed Elmardi (Lakota East) has one of Cincinnati's six goals. The Bearcats are off to a 1-5 start.

UC travels to West Virginia on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball: Sophomore outside hitter Karley Schlensker (Badin) leads Wilmington with 189 digs and ranks second with 12 service aces. She also has 25 assists.

The Quakers are 1-11 and will be at home against Bluffton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
