Badin High School graduate Malia Berkely is one win away from a national championship.

Berkely, a redshirt sophomore defender, scored her first goal of the season Friday night to lead No. 5 Florida State to a stunning 2-0 upset of top-ranked Stanford in the semifinals of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament.

The goal was the first of the season for Berkely, whose shot from about 25 yards out went in off the fingertips of Stanford goalie Alison Jahansouz.

"I saw the keeper off her line and thought if I hit it just right, it could go in," Berkley told seminoles.com. "And it did."

Berkely’s goal clinched the win over the defending national champion Cardinal, which had its 45-match unbeaten streak snapped.

At Badin, Berkely, a Liberty Twp. resident, was a two-time Ms. Ohio Soccer and a four-time, all-state selection. She led Badin to back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014.

The Seminoles will face Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina in Sunday’s title game (1 p.m., ESPNU).
