Halderman, Melvin

Halderman, Melvin Eugene "Gene"

Melvin Eugene "Gene" Halderman, 89, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

Born on February 8, 1935, in Tipp City, Ohio, he was the son of the late George and Ruth (Chappius) Halderman. He graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1953. He served his country in the US Marine Corp from 1953-1957 and was based in Japan. On October 14, 1960, he married Joan Albers of Brookville, Ohio.

Gene was employed as a printing machinist at Specialty Papers and James River Corp. An avid sports fan, he had a special love of basketball as a former player and season ticket holder. Gene also had an inscrutable face that supported his competitive nature. He enjoyed playing euchre, poker and other games with family and friends. Gene was a jokester – although he didn't tell you the joke – he would hand you the joke on paper from his wallet for you to read. He also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Florida and Texas with Joan and his family and friends, while also spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan (Albers) Halderman of Tipp City, Ohio; daughters, Julie (Kevin) Larger of Vandalia, Ohio, Jackie (Chris Legner) Halderman of Tipp City, Ohio, Angie Halderman of Cypress, Texas; sister, Phyllis (Halderman) Thompson of Atlanta, Ga; brothers, George Halderman of Lewisburg, Ohio, Jim (Opal) Halderman of West Milton, Ohio, and Dick (Gretchen) Halderman of Centerville, Ohio; grandchildren, Ryan (Kristian) Larger of Fairborn, Ohio and Jake Larger of Denver, Colo.; step-grandchildren Casey and Dan Legner, Troy, Ohio; great granddaughter, Lizzie Larger; and countless nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Heaton; sisters-in-law, Ann Halderman and Mary Sluterbeck; and brothers-in-law, Ronald Sluterbeck, Albert "Red" Heaton, and Ray Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 10am to noon on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 753 W. Hyatt Street, Tipp City, Ohio 45371. A Mass of Christian Burial at 12 pm will follow as well as a reception at St. Johns Church.

Kindly consider donations to the Tippecanoe Athletic Boosters Girls and Boys basketball program (Checks in care of Gene Halderman received at Tipp City High School Athletic Department, 615 Kessler-Cowlesville, Tipp City, OH 45371). The family would also like to acknowledge the caregivers at Hearth and Home Care Facility in Vandalia, Ohio.
