The YMCA must gain approval from the township’s zoning commission and trustees before construction can begin because the facility will sit in a zoned residential area. Once built, the two-story West Chester YMCA will include a workout facility, athletic fields, a 65,000-square-foot outdoor pool area, and nearly 300 parking spaces, according to development plan document submitted to the township.
The township’s zoning commission will vote on the issue during a regularly scheduled meeting at 8:30 p.m. Monday. The proposal will reach the trustees sometime next month, Juengling said.
Lakota Family YMCA’s Chief Executive Director John Schaller declined to offer details last week about the proposed YMCA and would only say that Lakota Family YMCA officials are “interested in furthering development in our service area.”
The Lakota Family YMCA currently operates a recreational facility, which features a gymnasium, workout facility and indoor and outdoor pools, on Yankee Road in Liberty Twp.
West Chester Twp., a municipality of roughly 61,000 resident, doesn’t currently have a comparable family recreational center such as the YMCA, Juengling said.
A new YMCA would mean increased traffic near Union Center Boulevard, said Judith Boyko, the township’s administrator, during last week’s West Chester Twp. trustee meeting
The township will likely have to add a traffic light to the boulevard, she said.
