Today is the third anniversary of a massive wind storm, known as a derecho, that hit the Miami Valley and Southwest Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service, a derecho is a widespread and fast-moving storm that produces damaging straight-line winds that span over a hundred miles.

The 2012 derecho was the third most expensive natural disaster in Ohio in decades.

The tornado outbreak that produced the Xenia tornado in 1974 and the 2008 winds from the remnants of Hurricane Ike are the only two events that created costlier damage statewide.
