This officer responded to a father-son fight that ended with one dead. He was honored for how he handled it.

Buchanan said Leist, a Monroe police officer since January 2009, was among the officers dispatched to a disturbance on Teil Tree Court on Aug. 5, 2017. According to the report, police were called to the residence “for an intoxicated male threatening suicide. Upon arrival it was discovered a domestic situation occurred between father and son.”

Monroe police said the fatal shooting appeared to have been done in self-defense.

At the time of the incident, police said based on all the information gathered it appeared that Colin Bailey acted in self-defense. No charges were filed and he was not taken into custody by police as he did not pose a risk to the community. The case was presented to a Butler County grand jury but no indictments were returned.

Bailey, 19, allegedly shot and killed his father Aug. 5 during a domestic disturbance at their Teil Tree Court home.

Christopher Bailey was taken to Atrium Medical Center, where he died about an hour later, according to the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

According to his citation, Leist arrived on the scene and determined the situation was a shooting with the shooter reported to be armed while still inside the residence.

“Officer Leist immediately took command of this situation and the suspect was taken into custody without incident,” the citation said.

According to the citations, Leist then directed immediate care efforts to the victim of the shooting and at the same time began to establish the parameters for a crime scene.

“The situation became tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving and Officer Leist maintained control of the situation with limited resources. He effectively and professionally contained this situation, attended to an injured victim and maintained crime scene integrity,” the citation said

Buchanan said Leist’s experience and training were reflected in this situation and truly display the Monroe Police Department’s Core Values of Honor, Integrity and Professionalism.

“Officer Leist’s actions reflect great credit upon himself, the Monroe Police Department, and the City of Monroe,” Buchanan said.
