Suspect in SWAT standoff in Fairfield identified

The man involved in a standoff this weekend with the Hamilton-Fairfield SWAT team died by suicide, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

The Hamilton-Fairfield SWAT team responded to the residence at about 8 p.m. Saturday, and then eight hours later the suspect, Kevin R. Wood, 48, of Fairfield, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Fairfield police responded to a residence in the 700 block of Walter Avenue regarding a complaint of gunshots, according to a press release.

Officers also reported to hearing what appeared to be gunshots coming from within the home. The Hamilton-Fairfield SWAT team responded and was fired upon by a suspect inside the building but no one was struck. Officers did not return fire, police said.

It wasn’t until 4 a.m. Sunday when the SWAT team entered the home and found Wood deceased.

The incident remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available, according to police.
