The main lobby of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office will be open beginning Wednesday night as a warming center as single-digit temperatures are in the forecast.

It is anticipated that cold weather conditions will get worse in the upcoming week and Sheriff Richard Jones said he hopes providing a temporary place inside will provide some comfort at the office located 705 Hanover St. in Hamilton.

“We have got to have compassion, and we are a 24-hour operation,” Jones said. ”We don’t have a lot of people show up, but we haven’t had snow like this in quite some time. So if you are living out and you are a homeless person and you have no where to go we would like to make it available. A lot of shelters can become overcrowded or unable to assist,” Jones said.

There are programs and warming centers open during the day, but most are not overnight, which makes the jail lobby an option. There are restrooms available.

The jail lobby will be open while temperatures remain near or below freezing.

Jones also encourages homeowners to bring their pets inside and provide adequate warm shelter for them and remember to check on elderly friends, relatives and neighbors to make sure they are safe from the cold.
