Ross teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student resigns

A Ross High School teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a student has resigned.

Ross Local School District officials received Friday the resignation of Steven Morio, a high school social studies teacher. He had been with the district for 13 years, according to Ross Superintendent Greg Young.

Morio had been placed on administrative leave by the district May 1 as a result of an investigation being conducted by the Ross Township Police Department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

“The school district acted swiftly in placing Mr. Morio on leave status when we became aware of the allegations made against him,” Young said. “We have been cooperating fully with the police investigation being conducted into educator misconduct on the part of Mr. Morio.”

The district had been prepared to take disciplinary action against Morio in the form of a hearing, but Morio resigned of his own accord, Young said.

“I think our number one concern was protecting our students, and we moved quickly in terms of the leave,” he said.

Butler County Sheriff’s Detective Rob Whitlock has been investigating an allegation that a male teacher at one time inappropriately touched a 17-year-old female student and may have given her marijuana on another occasion. The alleged incidents occurred in a car outside of Ross Twp., but in Butler County, in December and January.

The alleged incidents were reported April 29 by the teenager’s mother to Ross Twp. Police. The sheriff’s office also began investigating the allegations this month.

The Ross Twp. police report states that Ross High School told officers that the mother suspected that her daughter was avoiding going to school “due to a teacher’s inappropriate behavior.” The report lists the offense as sexual battery, but the suspect is considered uncharged.

Morio’s 2012 salary was $56,805, Young said.
