Riverbank Café closes its doors

An award-winning Hamilton eatery that had been serving customers for nearly six years closed its doors Monday.

A sign posted outside Riverbank Café, 102 Main Street, said it would be closed on Mondays starting July 29 but open the remainder of the week. But the sign remained on the restaurant’s closed doors Tuesday, and its phone number was also out of service.

Owner Dennis Kurlas confirmed the closure but declined to answer further questions, saying the decision was a personal issue, as well as a business one.

The business later publicly acknowledged the closure via a post to Facebook.

“We regret to inform all of our loyal customers that we are shutting our doors for good,” the message read. “Thanks to all who supported us, it’s been a great run.”

The restaurant, which marked its fifth anniversary last September with a weeklong celebration, bested 21 other eateries in March for “Best Entree” at a Taste of Northern Cincinnati for a low-country shrimp and grits dish.

“Riverbank Café has been a very visible and welcoming anchor to Main Street and Rossville,” said Steve Schnabl, secretary of the board of the Main Street Area Association. “Their closing comes as a surprise. We wish the owners and staff well in their next endeavors.”

In a Facebook post, Leah Wolf said she loved Riverbank Cafe’s onion straw cheeseburger.

“Their burgers were huge and made them worth the price, but we didn’t eat there often because it got expensive quickly for our family of four,” Wolf said.
