Principal changes at Middletown schools

Middletown City Schools will have several administrators serving in new roles this fall.

Marla Marsh, the principal of Highview 6th Grade Center, has announced she will retire in January 2014. Until then she will move into the role of assistant principal at Middletown Middle School.

Marsh will be filling a vacancy left by the retirement of Mark Lotspaih, who has been with Middletown schools for 31 years — more than 20 years as the middle school assistant principal.

“We thought it would be better for our students to hire an assistant principal (at MMS) in the middle/half semester of the year versus a principal for the 6th Grade Center in the middle of the year,” said Gracie Gregory, district spokeswoman.

Jennifer Dennis, principal of Central Academy, will take Marsh’s place at Highview 6th Grade Center. A replacement for Dennis is expected to be approved by school board members on June 24.

Marsh — who is retiring after 30 years in the district — said she will assist with teacher evaluations during the first semester at the middle school. Marsh is excited about having an extra semester with the same students she saw come through the Highview 6th Grade Center.

“Sixth grade is a tender age, and they model the (Highview) building after the middle school with changing classes and having multiple teachers,” Marsh said, to prepare students for middle school.

Anna Bowman — who’s been with the district since 2006 — has been appointed to assistant principal at Middletown High School to oversee the Success Academy, Freshman Academy and Bridges programs within the Manchester facility.

Farewell to superintendent

The community is invited to an informal gathering to say good luck and farewell to Middletown City Schools’ Superintendent Greg Rasmussen. His last day with the district before returning to Kansas will be June 30.

The event will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 24 at the Administration Building Board Room, 1515 Girard Ave. A regular board meeting will then begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
