A Butler County man accused of shooting and wounding a trooper was shot and killed after hours on the run from police in West Virginia.

Scott O’Brien, a Hamilton native, allegedly shot a state trooper during a Monday morning traffic stop, West Virginia State Police said police.

Authorities have not said what led to O’Brien’s shooting death, and it is unclear whether it was officer-involved.

A trooper pulled O’Brien over early Monday outside of a Dollar General store in Midway, West Va., which is roughly two hours southeast of Huntington.

During the traffic stop, O’Brien shot the trooper in the arm. The trooper, who was not named, is expected to recover, police said.
