A police presence at Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital this afternoon closed the emergency department after officials were concerned about a patient’s family.

Fairfield police was called to assist in an incident that started in a Hamilton County home, officials said.

Police Officer Doug Day said that before a non-breathing patient was transported to Mercy Fairfield from Springfield Twp., “the family was completely uncooperative with the medics.”

Several officers from Springfield Twp. escorted medics to the hospital, and the Springfield Twp. Police Department requested that Fairfield assist “to make sure there are no issues,” Day said.

Mercy Fairfield’s emergency department was temporarily shut down to visitors. It reopened shortly after 1 p.m., said hospital spokeswoman Nannette Bentley. She deferred all other comments to Fairfield police.
