In April, 33,261 pounds of prescription medication were collected throughout Ohio as part of a Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Medicines that languish in homes are susceptible to misuse and abuse, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet, according to the agency.
In addition, many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away — both potential safety and health hazards, according to the DEA.
