Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Caleb C. Botkins, 815 Dayton St., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of trafficking in hashish, and possession of hashish.

Alexandra Curtis, 6391 Hetzler Road, Middletown; indicted on one count each of aggravated burglary, and felonious assault (direct).

Kyle Douglas Kelly, 8421 Marie Place, Franklin; indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs.

John D. Eversole, 707 Poplar St., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of possession of heroin, possession of drugs, operating a vehicle under the influence, and driving under suspension.

Cortez Lamont Owensby, 2101 Queen Ave., Middletown; indicted on one count each of possession of a Fentanyl-related compound, possession of heroin, and possession of cocaine.

Jeremy Wayne McCarty, 88 Lakeside Drive, Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of possession of marijuana, and indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Amanda Rae Saurber, 905 Corwin Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of receiving stolen property, theft and forgery.

Julie Anne Italiano, 408 Cranewood Drive, Trenton; indicted on one count each of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto grounds of specified governmental facility, possession of a Fentanyl-related compound, and operating a vehicle under the influence (direct).

Tammy Johnson, 1034 Symmes, Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brandon Geoffrey Fields, 481 Lee Ann Drive, Cincinnati; indicted on two counts of receiving stolen property, and one count of tampering with records (direct).

William D. Nicholas, 7837 Princeton Road, Middletown; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
