38 people indicted in Butler and Warren counties

Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Bryan A. Urena, 913 Sycamore St., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of possession of cocaine, aggravated possession of drugs, and driving under suspension.

Andrew James Wainscott, 5330 Chateau Way, Fairfield; indicted on one count each of operating a vehicle under the influence, driving under OVI suspension, and possession of marijuana.

Edward Aquilla Ballard Jr., 2041 Casa Loma Drive, Fairfield; certified back to the lower court on one count each of violating a protection order, domestic violence, and resisting arrest.

Cortlin Barrett, 985 Haverhill Drive, Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of aggravated menacing.

Christopher Hill, 1909 Finley St., Middletown; indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs.

Maranda R. Lawson, 5323 Tomahawk Drive, Fairfield; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Kelsi A. Burch, 42 Opal Drive, Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of petty theft.

Todd Andrew Roberts, 2080 S. Breiel, Apt. B, Middletown; indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs.
