New Year’s arrests of 3 connected to fatal Middletown shooting: What we know now

Middletown police have arrested and charged three males early in the new year in connection with the Dec. 14 shooting death of a Middletown man.

The incident

Benny Barefield, 48, of the 800 block of Ninth Avenue, was found shot at 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 in his red Buick Lucerne at the corner of Yankee Road and Ninth Avenue. He was taken to Atrium Medical Center and pronounced dead, according to Middletown police.

The arrested

Quanterius Keith, 21, Cincinnati, was charged with aggravated murder, tampering with evidence, having weapons under disability, participating in a criminal gang, and parole violation. Keith’s bond was set at $2.15 million in a court appearance this morning.

Dwight Bailey III, 21, Middletown, was charged with complicity to aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, which is in relation to a separate incident on Oct. 23 during which a pedestrian was robbed of his cell phone at gun point. His bond was set at $2 million this morning.

A 17-year-old was charged with complicity to aggravated murder and participating in a criminal gang.

Police looking for fourth man

Police are continuing to search for a fourth suspect, Daniel Fitzgerald, 21, for whom they have a warrant for conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and participating in a criminal gang.

911 callers described scene on night of shooting

A man who placed a 911 call on Dec 14 told Middletown police dispatchers that “someone shot Benny Barefield,” his car was hit by bullets and it was locked.

“He is in his car. He hit the stop sign. There’s bullet holes in the car,” the caller told dispatchers.

The 911 caller said he had been driving down the road when he observed Barefield driving with his headlights off.

“So I flashed (headlights at) him,” the man said. “Then I was calling him.”
