Oxford and Miami University have discussed some sort of gateway for some time.
The brick, curved gateways will welcome visitors and feature both the Miami University and city logos, according to Cody Powell Miami Associate Vice President of Facilities, Planning and Operations.
The gateway along US 27 with retaining walls and ornamental trees fits with the area so steep that it cannot be mowed, Powell said.
The similar gateway on Ohio 73 will be erected at the back edge of Cook Field.
“It will be a bit more modest,” said John Seibert, Miami’s Director of Planning, Architecture and Engineering.
Oxford City Council member David Prytherch commended Miami for doing the gateways.
“Gateways are like money in the bank for us,” Prytherch said. “This will mean more construction, but in the long run, people will appreciate it.”
The work this summer on the gateways will mean traffic delays, but officials have not decided if the roads will be closed or traffic maintained with flaggers.
