Chicago police officers arrived to a horrific scene early Thursday after a woman reportedly stabbed her 70-year-old father and left a toddler to drown in a bathtub before plunging 11 stories with her 1-year-old son in her arms.

The Associated Press reported that officers arrived just before 2 a.m. to find the woman and her young son on the ground outside their apartment building in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood. The woman's father was upstairs, bleeding from stab wounds to his face and body.

A 2-year-old boy was found unresponsive in the bathtub of the apartment, the AP reported. Police officials were not immediately certain if the older toddler was also the woman's child.

The father and his daughter were both listed in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police officials said. The toddlers were pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the 70-year-old man told police his daughter "began stabbing him and then jumped from the 11th floor with her 1-year-old son."

Residents in the family's neighborhood expressed shock to ABC7 in Chicago.

"It was insanity to me," said one neighbor, who identified himself as Rahin. "I saw it. It was the first thing I saw when I woke up and it's right around the corner. I come out here with the dogs at 4 o'clock and I couldn't believe it."

Detectives remained at the scene later Thursday morning. No additional details of the case were immediately available.
