Police in a North Carolina city are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Saturday morning after a man was reportedly walking down the street waving a handgun.

The shooting happened just after 10 a.m. in Pineville near Interstate 485, WSOC-TV reported.

Officers said they received a 911 call about a man walking down the Pineville sidewalk, waving a handgun and pointing it at people passing by.

One officer responded to the area, but received backup from several other officers. When the other officers arrived at the scene, they engaged with the man. Police said the suspect was shot and taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition. His name has not been released, WSOC reported.

Authorities said two officers were involved in the shooting.

Police said many of the businesses in the area were open at the time so they are looking for surveillance footage of the incident. They are also interviewing several witnesses.

Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting.

No other information has been released.
