Hunter impaled on antler of elk he killed

An Oregon hunter trying to get to camp with an elk he killed was impaled on the animal’s antler after he crashed the all-terrain vehicle he was driving, police said.

Gary Heeter, 69, of Bend, was hunting with friends Saturday in the Maury Mountains of central Oregon when he killed the animal, according to KATU News in Portland. He was dragging the elk behind his four-wheeler when, as he attempted to go up a steep hillside, the ATV flipped and threw him backward onto the animal's antler.

Members of his hunting group worked to stem the bleeding and render first aid while waiting for rescue workers to find them, the news station reported. Crook County first responders took over his care until a medical helicopter could find a safe place to land.

Heeter was airlifted to St. Charles Hospital in Bend, where he was listed in fair condition several days later, KATU News reported.
