Texas Equusearch searched with the cooperation of the state police and the coroners’ office, and solitary human bones were recovered during searches on April 10 and Saturday.
An official determination has not been made as to the identity of the skeletal remains, according to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office, but initial observation indicates they are believed to belong to Katelyn Markham.
The remains were taken to Indianapolis, Ind., on Monday where a forensic anthropologist will conduct an examination and confirm the identity of the remains.
Markham, a 22-year-old art student, vanished from her Dorshire Drive residence in August 2011, leaving behind her purse, keys and her dog, Murphy. Hundreds of area residents, friends and caring strangers searched for Markham until her remains were found more than a year and half later.
On Aug. 13, a Franklin County, Ind., coroner ruled Markham's death a homicide, but exactly how she died could not be determined due to the condition of the remains.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze it is uncertain if the new remains may lead investigators to determine exactly how Markham died.
