Nearly 100 people who live in the Monroe Crossings subdivision heard an update and asked questions of Monroe police who are investigating a pair of drive-by shootings over the weekend.

The met Monday night at a playground just down the street from where the shootings took place.

Police said that multiple shots were fired late Saturday evening and early Monday morning into a home in the 400 block of Brandon Drive.

No one was injured in either incident. Police have said the drive-by shootings were targeting a specific person who lived in that house.

Police Chief Bob Buchanan told residents that their neighborhood was safe but that sometimes bad things happen. He asked residents to contact police if they have any video from home security cameras or if they know anything about the incident or the suspects who fired the shots.

Police said the shots penetrated the walls of the house.

Buchanan said police have increased patrols in the neighborhood and would let residents know once an arrest has been made.

This was the third time there has been a drive-by shooting in Monroe since 2014, Buchanan said. However, veteran officers said they could not recall a similar incident happening in city before 2014.

“The last two nights were pretty scary for the family and the neighborhood,” said Jim Fox, a resident. “The Monroe Police department is doing a fantastic job on their investigation. It’s just really incredible that something like this would take place in Monroe and/or in our subdivision.”

During the meeting, Fox offered police the use of his home to place a camera.

Another resident, Tim Beckett, said he and his wife were in their family room on Saturday night when they heard the shots. He said the it sounded like several shots were fired.

At first they thought it might have been an electrical transformer blowing because of the large amount of rain that fell that night. But when they saw the police cruiser lights the next night, they realized it may have been gunfire.

Beckett, who is a member of the homeowners board, said he was glad police “were on top of it with their investigation” and hopes for a quick resolution.

Alex Kaiser was also at home with his family when they heard 10 to 15 shots Saturday night.

“It was just shocking to us,” he said. “This is a tight-knit community where everyone gets along.

“Then when we hear shots ring out on a Saturday night with our kids in the family room it’s kind of alarming. It kinda makes you not take anything in life for granted.”
