The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments awarded more than $4.18 million in federal funding in October 2018 toward the nearly $6.9 million project to rehabilitate Central Avenue. The city’s share of the project is just more than $2.7 million, according to Scott Tadych, Middletown public works/utilities director.
The project is planned for construction in 2022. In the past few weeks, surveyors have been working along Central Avenue in preparation for the upcoming project.
In the proposed agreement through ODOT’s Local Public Agency program, city staff will design, build and administer the construction contract as well as stipulating that Middletown will follow all federal guidelines.
The project will include the reconstruction and improvements on Central Avenue between Verity Parkway and University Boulevard. It will also include street reconstruction with upgraded pavement, curbs, street and pedestrian lighting and bike racks.
The project will also include new signal installations, updated signal timing and left turn lanes on Central Avenue at the existing signalized intersections with Verity Parkway.
Tadych previously told this news outlet that the project will improve the aging infrastructure and support future economic growth and redevelopment envisioned by the community.
He said the project would improve and enhance the primary east-west downtown corridor and will be a significant step forward in implementing the Downtown Master Plan.
