When the crews arrived, Svarda was not breathing and did not have a pulse and a bystander was performing CPR, according to Karen Ward of Premier Health.
The crew made up of Zachary Dapper, Emma Meyer, John Kuehnle, Bryce Nartker and Zachary Pingleton, were recognized for their actions and care that led to the successful resuscitation of Svarda.
Ward said quick effective CPR is critical. Of the 356,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the country that happen annually, 90 percent are fatal, she said.
Svarda spent nine days in the hospital and is recovering. He was on hand at council to offer his thanks.
“These guys are heroes. I’ve got a lot to live for. I appreciate them. Without them I wouldn’t be here. There’s not enough words to say thanks. Nothing I can do to show it, except try to be a good person and do what’s right. Thanks you guys,” Svarda said.
