Holiday lights and Christmas trees can be recycled at four MetroParks of Butler County locations through Feb. 1 at no cost to those dropping off items.

Fairfield also is offering a free tree recycling drop-off location for its residents.

MetroParks will accept broken or unwanted stringed holidays lights and natural trees in partnership with Cohen Recycling through Feb. 1 at four locations from 8 a.m. to dusk.

“Through these programs, MetroParks is committed to preserving our environment and offering the community convenient, sustainable options for holiday disposal,’’ said Katie Ely-Wood, MetroParks spokeswoman.

“We’ll take…lights to Cohen for them to be stripped down and their material recycled.”

Only natural trees with decorations, tinsel, and lights removed will be accepted. No household light bulbs should be dropped off.

Trees will be chipped and the resulting mulch placed along park trails and used for natural resource projects.

Items can be dropped off at the following MetroParks:

  • West Chester Twp.: Voice of America, 7850 VOA Park Drive, near the lodge
  • Fairfield Twp.: Rentschler Forest, 5701 Reigart Road
  • Ross Twp.: Timberman Ridge, 1976 Timberman Road, near the shelter and playground area
  • Madison Twp.: Meadow Ridge, 5101 Circle Parkway, main parking lot

Fairfield’s tree recycling program begins Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 9, at Waterworks Park, 5133 Groh Lane. A tree disposal corral will be set up in the south parking area – closest to River Road.

Remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel before dropping off trees. They will be shredded with the mulch being spread in city parks.

West Chester Twp. is not accepting trees for recycling this year, said Andrew Reeder.

“The township will not have separate drop-off locations, but residents who wish to recycle Christmas trees are encouraged to participate in this MetroPark program at VOA,” Reeder said.
