Mercy Health, Wellington Orthopaedic to partner on services

Cincinnati-area health system Mercy Health and independent practice Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine announced Thursday plans to exclusively partner on services.

The agreement goes in effect Sept. 1.

Details of the partnership include that Wellington doctors will not become employees of Mercy Health, but will provide services exclusively for Mercy; six Wellington offices (including Oxford and West Chester Twp. locations) will become Mercy Health locations; and current Wellington and Mercy Health patients will be able to receive specialty orthopedic services at either Mercy or former Wellington offices.

The partnership opens new doors for Mercy Health, said Dr. Dan Roth, chief medical officer of the system and president of Mercy Health Physicians. Together, Mercy Health and Wellington will offer more services, in more places. It allows Mercy Health to partner with more school districts — Wellington is well known for its high school sports medicine programs.

“It’s a big deal because it’s 18 highly skilled physicians, it’s 200 employees that will be joining Mercy, and six new locations,” Roth said.

Mercy Health will employ the therapists and athletic trainers at the Wellington offices.

Wellington’s specialists will continue seeing patients and perform surgery in present office locations and surgery centers, according to Mercy Health officials.

Wellington offers orthopedic sub-specialties including foot and ankle; hand, wrist and elbow; hip; joint replacement; knee, neck and back; and shoulder and sports-related concussion. Services also include rehabilitation and training services.

Wellington offices in Butler County, which will become Mercy Health offices, include 5151 Morning Sun Road, Suite A, Oxford; and 8737 Union Centre Blvd., West Chester Twp. Mercy Health also operates Mercy Health — Fairfield Hospital on Mack Road.

“Mercy Health and Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine fit well together since both organizations take an individualized approach to caring for the people of Cincinnati,” said Dr. Robert Heidt Jr., board president for Wellington, in a statement.

Wellington has a seventh office, Western Ridge, that’s in a TriHealth-owned location and is not part of this arrangement.
