After 43 years, the McDonald’s restaurant on Breiel Boulevard will be demolished next month and a new McDonald’s will be built in its place.

Martha Reid, the store’s general manager, said the current corporate-owned restaurant will close Sept. 5 and will reopen about three months later. She said the current structure will be demolished around Sept. 9.

Like some other area McDonald’s restaurants, Reid said the re-built Breiel location will have a smaller dining area and a two-lane drive-thru. About 70 percent of the restaurant’s business comes from drive-thru customers, which she said should increase its business when the new store is completed.

“We’ll be customer obsessed, plus it will have a fresh new look,” Reid said.

Lisa Baum, a spokeswoman representing McDonald’s, said the groundbreaking is scheduled for Sept. 8.

She said the new restaurant will feature free wi-fi as well as convenience outlets throughout the dining room for electronics, a wood finish décor, and 100 percent LED lighting for energy efficiency.

Dining room seating in the new arrangement will total about 70 seats, which is down from about 90 seats currently at the restaurant, according to Baum.

Baum declined to comment on the cost of the project. A building or demolition permit had not been filed with the city building department as of Thursday afternoon.

City Planner Martin Kohler said McDonald’s received approval for the second new menu board for the drive-thru as well as new building signage along Breiel Boulevard.

Reid, who has worked for McDonald’s for 21 years, has been the general manager of the store located at 1301 S. Breiel Blvd. for the past three years. Among the other updates that customers will notice when the store re-opens are dual point ordering system at the front counter and drive-thru, a flat-screen television, digital menu boards and new landscaping.

“I’ve never had a brand new store before,” she said. “I’m pretty excited. I can’t wait.”

She said the restaurant currently employs about 75 people and said they will be hiring more people to work there. During the rebuild, employees will be working at other McDonald’s restaurants in the city on South Main Street, Verity Parkway and on Commerce Drive near the Interstate 75/Ohio 122 interchange, she said.
