Man found hiding in home’s closet charged with burglary

A Franklin man was charged with burglary after he allegedly was found hiding in a closet and he told police he was there because he was being chased by people who wanted to kill him.

David P. Johnson, 36, was charged with burglary, a first-degree felony, because on Wednesday night he entered a home in the 1900 block of Monarch Drive, according to Middletown police. Johnson was found by the homeowner’s daughter and when the homeowner came downstairs, he told Johnson to stand on the front porch while he called police.

But Johnson ran off the porch toward a wooded area, the report read. Several officers responded and set up a perimeter around the area. Witnesses told police they saw a man matching Johnson’s description running through the neighborhood.

Police found Johnson hiding in the corner of two fences near the 1900 block of Monarch. He was held at gunpoint and told to get on his stomach. He then was handcuffed, according to police.

Johnson told police someone was trying to kill him. Then he changed his story and police believe he may have used an illegal narcotic, possibly methamphetamine, according to the report.

He will have his preliminary hearing Oct. 26 in Middletown Municipal Court, according to records.
