Middletown police arrested a man Thursday afternoon after he allegedly stole a car with children inside from Atrium Medical Center.

Police said the incident happened about 4:18 p.m. when Nita Coburn, 69, was taking an older woman who had been injured to the emergency room for treatment. There were two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, in the back seat as Coburn was helping the woman out of the car near the entrance.

Police said about 10 seconds later, Dalvir Singh, 24, of India, allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat and took off with the children still in the back seat. The boy opened the door to escape, and his sister started to jump out of the car, but Singh allegedly grabbed the girl’s hooded sweatshirt and did not allow her to leave.

As she tried to get away her brother grabbed hold of her and pulled her away from Singh, and they both tumbled out of the vehicle as it was moving, police said.

Coburn did not realize the children were able to escape because they went out of the passenger side of the car while she was chasing the car on the driver’s side, police said. As Coburn opened the driver’s door to regain control of the vehicle she thought her grandchildren were in, Singh slammed the door shut again and locked the door.

Coburn kept hanging onto the vehicle and was panicking because she thought the children were still inside, police said. The vehicle drug her until it accelerated at a high rate of speed and she was forced to let go.

Officers Connor Kirby and P.R. Engleka saw the stolen vehicle fleeing the scene on University Boulevard near Nelbar Street and stopped the vehicle.

Singh was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, grand theft and felonious assault for dragging. He is being held under a $200,000 bond in the Middletown City Jail.

The Middletown Division of Police will be recognizing the boy’s quick action to not only get out of the vehicle but also making sure that his sister got out with him, officials said.

Singh’s next appearance in Middletown Municipal Court will be at 1:30 p.m. on May 3.
