Philpot released a statement Thursday saying he will take a position with another school system, but did not name the district.
“The decision to leave Madison, the district I have been honored to serve for the last 16 years … was not an easy decision and one that came after much contemplation and many hours of debating and praying,” said Philpot, who was appointed to the superintendent’s job in 2012.
“As much as I love this district, the community, the staff and students … the professional opportunity that I thave been presented with will better meet the needs of my family and at the present time,” he said.
Philpot’s time at the 1,500-student district just west of Middletown has been marked by numerous successes and a violent episode that drew national attention in 2016 when a Madison Middle School student opened fire in the school cafeteria, injuring three students.
This last fall saw the district’s historic run deep into the state football playoffs as the Madison Mohawks squad became a beloved underdog in Southwest Ohio sports, coming up one game short of playing in the state championship in its division.
“As a district we have been through some of the most trying and difficult situations imaginable, yet every time, the Madison Mohawks emerge more unified, better and stronger, thus the endearing slogan “Mohawk Strong,” said Philpot.
