Monroe City Council will be moving forward on the first phase of Monroe Bicentennial Commons Park at the former Americana amusement park site.

Council awarded a bid for $514,800 submitted by Majors Enterprises of Monroe for the first phase and two alternate bids for the Bicentennial Commons Park. City Manager Bill Brock said the work will be for the installation of utilities and electric. The bid was approved as an emergency measure so work can move forward.

It was the second time that bids had been submitted for this project as the last time, council rejected all bids as they were over the engineer’s estimate for the project.

Brock said the construction is expected to be completed in 120 days for that project.

But, council voted down an emergency resolution to fund nearly $500,000 for a proposed dog park, shelters, paved walking path, parking lot and driveway at the Baker Sports Park on Cincinnati-Dayton Road. The vote was 6-1, with Councilman Robert Routson voting for the project. Council also unanimously voted to reject all bids submitted for the project.

Councilwoman Christina McElfresh, who is a dog owner and believes there is a need for a dog park, wondered if that would be a good use of taxpayer dollars. She wondered if moving the dog park to Monroe Crossings Park would be a possibility.

One suggestion involved looking at moving the dog park to the land near the new police station. However, it would cost about $24,000 for fencing, city officials said.
