Hundreds of books are on sale this weekend at Lane Library in Oxford.

From westerns and romance novels to rare classics and children’s literature, hundreds of books are on sale this weekend at Lane Library in Oxford.

The bi-annual Friends of the Library Book Sale is held in the Havinghurst Meeting Room on the library’s second floor at 441 S. Locust St.

The volunteer group runs the sale every February and August to raise funds for the public library. Thursday night was the Friends of the Library’s exclusive preview, where their members got first choice of the available books.

Friends of the Library board member Sharon Bogan said most of the books in the sale are donated by Oxford residents. For the past six months, the items dropped off at the library have been shuttled by volunteers to a storage locker where they are saved for the major bi-annual sales.

The money raised by these sales go toward special library events like the book bike, author visits, and prizes for the summer reading program.

“We exist so we can support their efforts at the library,” Bogan said.

Most of the books are on sale for $1 each or less, so many residents bring in boxes and bags to carry out all their new purchases.

Saturday is the bag sale. Visitors get a bag at the door and they’ll pay $3 for everything they can fit in the bag.

City Council member David Prytherch and his wife been members of Friends of the Library for more than a decade.

“We love books and we love the Friends (of the Library), so it’s a win-win,” Prytherch said.

The sale is open to the public Friday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bag sale is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
