With opening day just about one month away for the Butler County Challenger Baseball League, officials are still scrambling to clean up the graffiti that adorns some of the dugouts that vandals tagged in early March.

The Challenger league, which started 30 years ago, caters to those with Down syndrome, autism, muscular deficiencies and other special needs. Alan LaKamp, president of the league, has been reaching out to volunteers since the vandalism occurred in early March at Crawford Woods in Hamilton.

He hopes to get a fresh coat of paint on the vandalized dugouts before opening day, which is May 7.

“We are going to have a clean up day in April, and we have so many people that have volunteered to come out and help,” LaKamp said. “A group from Dayton is going to replace the flag and the Hamilton Parks and Rec stepped up to help get the dugouts painted.”

A date has not yet been set for the April clean-up effort, he said.

Many donors have come forward to help purchase paint and replace the picnic tables, he said.

LaKamp said he has filed a police report about the vandalism, stating damages could be as much as $1,000.

“I just don’t understand who would do something like this,” he said.
