Public Information Officer Sgt. Monte Mayer said a preliminary report shows that a 2012 Black Chevrolet Camaro was observed by a sheriff’s deputy at approximately 2:47 a.m. parked near the front door of Marshall Elementary School on U.S. 27.
As the deputy entered the parking lot to investigate, the driver, later identified as Sweeney, took off north on U.S. 27 toward Oxford at a high rate of speed, Mayer said.
Mayer said the deputy gave chase and was traveling at approximately 120 m.p.h. and the Camaro was “pulling away.” An Oxford Twp. police officer clocked the Camaro at approximately 130 mph near Booth Road, Mayer said.
As Sweeney approached Chestnut Street in Oxford, he lost control and went off the left side of the road and traveled more than 400 feet before crashing into a tree behind Emerson Hall on the campus of Miami University, Mayer said.
Alcohol is suspected to be a factor, Mayer said, adding that Sweeney refused testing and was automatically cited for OVI.
Mayer also said Sweeney was taken to McCullough Hyde Hospital by the Oxford Life squad and treated for minor injuries.
