FAIRFIELD — As the Fairfield City Schools district prepares to cut busing for grades 10 through 12 for the 2011-2012 school year, start and dismissal times for the schools have been adjusted to accommodate new bus routes.
Fairfield Senior High School will start and end about one hour later than it does currently — school will start at 8 a.m. and dismiss at 2:58 p.m., whereas now, school starts at 7 a.m. and dismisses at 1:53 p.m.
The school day at Fairfield Freshman School will remain relatively the same, except students will be at school for 16 fewer minutes, with school dismissing at 1:30 p.m. instead of 1:46 p.m. as it does currently. Students at Fairfield Middle School will start their day about 30 minutes earlier.
For freshman students who are involved in athletics or fine arts at the high school, the district is working on a plan to accommodate and transport them. “We’re planning on creating something like a study table at the Freshman School,” said Business Director Chad Lewis. “It would be a controlled environment for those athletes and student performers and then we would provide an activity bus that would drive them to the high school and drop them off.”
Lewis said there are obvious costs associate with the plan, but administrators are continuing to work out the details.
Board of Education Member Balena Shorter expressed concerns that with the busing cuts taking effect next year, working parents may not be able to drop their children off at school before work with the start time at 8 a.m.
Superintendent Cathy Milligan said there won’t be any formal programs for students that arrive early, but they will be able to sit in the cafeteria or another designated place in the school before school starts.
