Ross honors top students in the class of 2010

ROSS TWP. — The seniors of Ross High School gathered in an assembly Wednesday, May 19, to honor the top 10 students in the class for “Senior Signing Day.”

Amanda Oaks finished top in the class with high honors all four years. She was also an officer in the color guard and a National Merit Commended Student. She plans to attend the University of Evansville to pursue a degree in creative writing with the goal of becoming a college professor and an author of books for young adults.

Oaks will serve as co-valedictorian with Megan Thie, who was active in music and drama, performing in all 12 plays and musicals and serving as president of the choir. Thie was offered $127,000 in scholarships and direct admittance into Indiana University’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Hutton Honors College, where she will study creative writing.

Shelby Hurrell and Ben Hemmelgarn will share salutatorian honors.

Hurrell served as president of the National Honor Society, was the Math Department Scholar and winner of the Butler County Calculus Award. She plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to major in engineering.

Hemmelgarn served four years on the school student council, including three years as president. He lists among his accomplishments his three years hosting the talent show, and making commercials and CDs for Ben & Brad Productions. He plans to study molecular genetics at the Ohio State University Honors College.

Andree Chen, who will be attending the University of Cincinnati with an undeclared major, was a member of the Rhythm’n’Motion Show Choir, the National Honor Society and was president of the Pure Harmony singing group.

Erin Murphy plans to major in education at Miami University in the honors program. She was a National Merit Commended Student and a member of the National Honor Society.

Casey Vatter was a member of the National Honor Society and won All-League Academic Honors in baseball, basketball and football. He plans to play football and possibly baseball for Central University, where he will study psychology.

Dana Buelsing was a member of the National Honor Society, student council, Volunteer Advisory Board, and won the Presidential Education Award of Merit. She plans to attend Loyola University and hopes to become a pediatrician.

Teejay Rhodus, who plans to study zoology at Miami University, twice went to state and once to nationals for FCCLA competitions.

Grace Metzger was a member of the National Honor Society and won honors in volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. She plans to attend Miami University and study business.

The Ross High School commencement will be 7 p.m. June 3 at Tri-County Assembly of God, 7350 Dixie Highway, Fairfield.
