Rose Chevrolet to stay open

Boehner’s office says GM will reinstate Rose Chevrolet after arbitration.

HAMILTON — It appears Rose Chevrolet will be one of the more than 900 General Motors dealerships to be reinstated through arbitration.

The office of U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., issued a statement Friday, June 11, that the Hamilton dealership prevailed in its arbitration with GM and would be allowed to remain in business. The congressman said he received a call from GM officials confirming the reinstatement.

However, the dealership itself has yet to receive word if it will be re-granted its franchise rights to sell new vehicles, said Ed Larkin, Rose Chevrolet general manager, by phone Saturday.

Larkin returned Thursday from a weeklong arbitration case in Cleveland. He said he expected to learn the outcome of his arguments in July.

“Boehner’s office has been extremely supportive and very thorough with following up with how we are doing,” Larkin said. “I think our arbitration went well. The facts speak for themselves, but I have not heard anything official from GM.”

As part of its restructuring, GM last year told roughly 2,000 dealerships it would not renew their franchise agreements expiring October 2010, including the one for Rose Chevrolet. However, in December Congress ordered arbitration hearings for rejected GM or Chrysler Group dealers that wanted to pursue it. About 1,160 GM dealers took advantage of the offer.

While GM officials originally billed the cuts as a way to save money and boost sales, the company’s new leadership team has said a smaller network is not necessarily essential for its future profitability.

“(The) news is all that Rose Chevrolet asked for: a fair decision based on their record as one of the best dealerships in southwest Ohio,” Boehner said in a statement. “It is also an important reminder of the questions that remain unanswered regarding the government’s role in the restructuring of GM.”
