A retired area dentist, now living Dublin, has pleaded guilty to 10 felony charges in connection with investment fraud involving four Butler County victims.

Russell L. Bowermaster, 78, who has stage 4 skin cancer, appeared in Butler County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to four counts of theft, three counts of securities fraud, and three counts of misrepresentations in the sale of securities.

Judge Keith Spaeth set 11 a.m. Oct. 29 as Bowermaster’s sentencing date. He owes $125,000 in restitution and faces a maximum sentence of 24 years in prison. He is free on bond.

Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser said if Bowermaster is able to make 100 percent in restitution by his sentencing date, he will reduce the charges, noting this is a case were “a ton of cash for the victims is worth more than a pound of flesh.”

The charges are based on the sale of securities by Bowermaster through his company, Dublin-based Biodontos LLC, to four Butler County dentists in 2010.

Four people invested $125,000 in Bowermaster’s company, which was attempting to develop technology related to the storage and use of stem cells. The funds were allegedly used for gambling at several casinos, credit card payments and other personal debts, according to prosecutors.

Bowermaster operated a dental office in Hamilton County prior to retiring in 1992.
