Oxford community advocate ‘lived life to the fullest’

John “Jack” Beaton, well-known in the Oxford community, died last week in Oxford. He was 89.

He graduated from Miami University and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was the second-generation owner of Beaton Insurance Agency until 1991 when his son Jim, who later died, became owner. Beaton continued working with the agency until 2008 when he was 79 years old.

His daughter, Kathy Hucke, said her father “lived life to the fullest” and he cherished every relationship. He remained close friends with some of his school classmates, his daughter said.

He also made sure to always put his family first, she said.

After her mother, Marilyn, died 10 years ago, and she retired as a teacher, Hucke said she spent more time with her father. She’ll miss those father-daughter chats, she said.

“He always gave wonderful, sound advice,” she said.

She said her father enjoyed traveling, boating, reading, golf, wildlife, sharing coffee with friends, and spending time with his family.

Beaton is survived by his sister, Carolyn Simpson; daughter, Kathy Hucke and husband Mark; daughter-in-law Beth Beaton; grandchildren, Amy Kearns and husband Ryan, Betsy Beaton, Erik Hucke and Kelly Rice, Sara Turner and husband Josh; great grandson, Wyatt James Turner; and nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held this weekend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jim Beaton Memorial Scholarship via the Oxford Community Foundation or Hospice of Cincinnati.
