HAMILTON — Around 40 women recently gathered to kick off the start of this year’s Hamilton-Fairfield Newcomers and Neighbors meetings.
The club, originally called Welcome Wagon after World War II, is mainly comprised of retired women, said Me Me Kessler, the group’s president.
“Retirement becomes a bit lonely,” Kessler said.
Entertainment at the Wednesday, Sept. 8, meeting included entertainer Brian Brenner, who dazzled the women with hip-shaking and tunes from Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Hank Williams and Jim Reeves.
On the group’s more philanthropic side, more than $1,300 was donated last year to Fairfield and Hamilton food pantries. The 54-member group also donates to Dove House, a battered women’s shelter.
“These ladies are very generous,” said Jo Reed, treasurer.
The Newcomers and Neighbors Club meets once a month but smaller sub-groups meet more regularly.
“We have five different clubs within the group so there’s something for everyone,” Kessler said.
The clubs include hobbies such as books, antiques and bridge.

“Once you get in you don’t want to leave, they’re friends forever,” said Joan Gross, a vice president and 25-year member.
