A Middletown man was charged with open container, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, after he told police he hit his accelerator instead of his brake and crashed into a Middletown eye doctor’s office.

David Christian, 61, told Middletown police he popped up on the sidewalk on Nov. 4 and ran into the door of Combs Family Eyecare, 1015 Summit Drive.

Witnesses told police they saw Christian drink a beer after the crash. The officer performed a field sobriety test, and he wrote in the accident report he “did not see any of the clues” of impairment.

Christian admitted to police to drinking one beer and having it open in his car while he was driving, according to the report.
