The Middletown City Building will close at 2 p.m. today apparently ahead of a scheduled demonstration to begin an hour later.

Courts will remain open and emergency services will be available.

A peaceful protest is planned today at 3 p.m. in front of the city building, according to social media posts, which urges people to come out and “Let our voices be heard.”

The protest is in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. Floyd died while in police custody. Officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes, was later charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

On Saturday, a small, peaceful demonstration also at the city building ended with a few juveniles throwing rocks, but there were no injuries, damage or arrests.
