Miami University digital detective honored for work across Butler County

A Miami University police detective known around the region for his ability to find digital clues has been honored by the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office for his work.

Sgt. Walt Schneider was presented with the Butler County Prosecutor's 3rd Annual Meritorious Service Award on Tuesday.

A dozen Butler County departments nominated Schneider for the honor, earned for the work he does to help those departments and his efforts “as a mentor and teacher to those in other police departments who are training to become digital forensic analysts themselves.”

Schneider’s work includes retrieving data and evidence from cell phone and computers to investigate cases.

He has gathered evidence for a variety of cases from homicides to food stamp fraud to the sale of fake Nike shoes.
