Miami Regionals to celebrate veterans during Heroes Week

Miami Regionals will be honoring active military personnel and veterans during its second annual Heroes Week, Nov. 5-12.

More than 15 events are planned:.

Nov. 5: Student Veteran Panel, noon in Johnston Hall, Room 017 on the Middletown campus; and Nov. 9 from noon in Mosler Hall, Harriet Taylor room, on the Hamilton campus. Hear Regionals student veterans stories and find out what it is like to be a student veteran.

Nov. 5: Tales of D-Day Plus 1 Heroes, noon to 1:30 p.m., in Gardner-Harvey Library on the Middletown campus. A book reading and discussion over experiencing war.

Nov. 6: Chili Lunch, noon to 4 p.m. in Mosler Hall, Room 108 on the Hamilton campus. Come to enjoy chili and check out the Veterans Center.

Nov. 7: Combat Resume, 3 to 4 p.m. in Johnston Hall, Room 111 on the Middletown campus. This seminar is designed for military personnel and veterans to help provide a better understanding of the corporate interview process, including how to prepare for the interview, resume tips, body language, delivery, and execution.

Nov. 7: Miami RedHawks vs. Ohio Bobcats, time TBD, at Yager Stadium on the Oxford campus. Watch the RedHawks play the Bobcats at the Heroes Night Football Game where military personnel will be recognized.

Nov. 8: Butler County Veterans Service Commission, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Mosler Hall, Room 108 on the Hamilton campus. The Butler County Veterans Commission will be on hand to answer any questions related to VA benefits.

Nov. 9: Veterans Day Service, 11:30 a.m., at the Voice of America Learning Center. The Center will again join with the Caring Community Collaborative of West Chester and Liberty Townships to honor veterans, with this year's focus being women who have served. Speakers will be Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Stoffa, Commander of Air Force Detachment 643 at Wright State University and Debra Zevallos, a veteran of the U.S. Navy Medical Services Corps. Admission is free, but seating is limited. RSVP by Oct. 30 at caringcommunitycollaborative.com.

Nov. 10: Erik Larson Presents Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, 7 to 8 p.m. in Phelps Hall, Parrish Auditorium on the Hamilton campus. The Michael J. Colligan History Project presents bestselling author and historian, Erik Larson for a talk on his bestselling book that describes the 1915 sinking of the ocean liner, Lusitania. RSVP is encouraged but not required. RSVP online at MiamiOH.edu/Regionals/rsvp.

Nov. 11: Oxford Parks and Recreation Veterans Day Ceremony, noon at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Join the city of Oxford in recognizing Veterans Day at the park.

Nov. 11: Veterans Tribute, 2 p.m. on the corner of Spring Street and Campus Avenue on the Oxford campus. Miami University dedicates the Veterans Tribute to all current, former and future students that have served in the military services.

Nov. 12: Film Screening: From War to Wisdom, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., in Phelps Hall, Parrish Auditorium on the Hamilton campus. This documentary was filmed by local Marine Veteran Josh Hisle. This film gives an inside look into combat to find out what happens when an elite group of Marines comes home. It illustrates the struggles they endure and shares how some Marines turn tragedies into triumphs. A veterans panel will be held after the film.

Nov. 12: Veterans Dinner, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center on the Hamilton campus. The evening will include dinner, a silent auction, and a raffle. The dinner is free and open to the public. All proceeds directly benefit Student Veterans Centers of Miami University Regionals Hamilton and Middletown Campuses. There are also multi-day events on both campuses. A scavenger hunt will be held around the Regionals campuses Monday through Thursday. There will be a Deployment Map displayed all day in Schwarm Commons on the Hamilton campus and in Johnston Hall on the Middletown campus. Displayed in the Veterans Centers on the Middletown and Hamilton campus will be Veteran Biographies & Fallen Heroes and also an Artifact Table.
