Local rapper to sign record deal

When he was younger, Blake Mayabb of Middletown began writing poetry, cramming page after page into a binder.

Those poems eventually became lyrics, and the lyrics turned into rap songs. Now, those songs have caught the attention of a Detroit-based music company, JR Records, that intends to sign Mayabb, now 20, to a deal that will send him touring around the country this fall.

“It’s been pretty crazy recently. It’s going to be wild,” he said.

After Mayabb performed a few concerts at Dayton- and Cincinnati-area clubs, and posted his songs on MySpace, JR Records found his music there.

“At first they asked me to do a show, and I kind of saw it as a good opportunity. They told me they liked me,” Mayabb said.

Lamont Crawford, as known as DJ New Money, who heads JR Records, said he had been impressed first with Mayabb’s work ethic and how he posted his own material on MySpace.

“One track in particular I really like is a song called ‘Since 89’ - his language and his delivery is very, very good. If people listen to it, it’s something everybody can relate to,” Crawford said.

The tour’s area stops will include Cleveland on Oct. 4, Cincinnati on Oct. 6, Lima on Oct. 7, and Indianapolis on Oct. 13, Mayabb said.

While JR Records is a small outfit, Mayabb says he wants to “go as big as I can go with it.”

“That’s always been the plan for me,” Mayabb said. “I’m trying to bring reality back into hip hop where you’re telling a story instead of just repeating a catchy hook.

“I guess it’s more music from the heart,” he said.

That stance isn’t a surprise, considering Mayabb’s MySpace account has a background that says, in very large letters, “Music is my life.”

“Music is like therapy for me ... I can relate to music. For three minutes when I’m doing a song, I can get away from the problems I have,” Mayabb said.
